Aniracetam

A nootropic compound showing cognitive improvements in Alzheimer's disease trials but not in healthy individuals.

Evidence category: Clinical study. This describes the source category, not approval or certainty.

Regulatory statement in source: Not separately recorded; do not infer approval from the evidence category.

Aniracetam is a racetam-class nootropic that has been studied in human clinical trials for cognitive impairment and dementia. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial of 109 patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's disease, daily aniracetam produced double-digit percentage improvements on cognitive assessment scales at 4-6 months, while placebo recipients showed deterioration over the same period. Emotional state improved significantly at 3 months in treated patients. However, efficacy in healthy individuals without cognitive impairment remains limited; animal studies in healthy mice found no cognitive enhancement. Aniracetam is approved in some countries but not the United States.

Benefits reported in the imported source

  • Randomized trials show cognitive and emotional improvements in Alzheimer's disease patients
  • Generally well-tolerated in studied populations

Risks and limits

  • No evidence of benefit in healthy individuals; animal studies in healthy mice showed no effect
  • Long-term safety beyond 12 months not established in trials
  • Regulatory status varies by country; not approved in United States

Source bottom line: Aniracetam has shown cognitive benefits in Alzheimer's disease trials but lacks evidence for enhancement in healthy people.
