Alpha-GPC
A choline compound studied mainly in stroke and vascular-dementia recovery.
Evidence category: Clinical study. This describes the source category, not approval or certainty.
Regulatory statement in source: Not separately recorded; do not infer approval from the evidence category.
Alpha-GPC is a choline-containing compound found naturally in the brain and used clinically in several countries as a source of choline for acetylcholine synthesis. It has been studied mainly in older adults recovering from stroke or with vascular dementia, where multicenter Italian trials measured cognitive and functional recovery, as well as in smaller studies of healthy adults looking at short-term measures of alertness or power output. Evidence in medically supervised, cognitively impaired populations is more extensive than evidence in healthy, unimpaired adults.
Benefits reported in the imported source
- In clinical trials of stroke and vascular dementia patients, alpha-GPC was linked to measurable improvement in cognitive and functional test scores
- Reported tolerability in these clinical populations was generally good
Risks and limits
- Most supporting trials were conducted in patients with stroke or dementia rather than healthy adults, so applicability to a general population is uncertain
- Mild gastrointestinal complaints, insomnia, and headache have been reported in trial participants
Source bottom line: Alpha-GPC has real clinical trial support in stroke and vascular dementia populations, but evidence specific to cognitive or athletic enhancement in healthy adults is thinner and more mixed, so its benefits outside a medical context are not well established.
Uncertainty: Reference information only. Not medical advice.
Study protocols — reports, not instructions
2044 patients with recent stroke or transient ischemic attack across an open multicenter Italian trial
- Reported regimen
- Alpha-GPC given intramuscularly at 1000 mg per day for 28 days, followed by oral dosing of 400 mg three times daily for the following five months
- Duration
- Twenty-eight days of intramuscular dosing followed by five months of oral dosing
- Reported outcome
- Statistically significant improvement in mental recovery scores during both the intramuscular and oral phases, with adverse events reported in a small minority of patients and good overall tolerability

120 patients with mild to moderate vascular dementia in an open multicentre trial
- Reported regimen
- Alpha-GPC 1 g per day given intramuscularly for 90 days, compared against intramuscular cytosine diphosphocholine at the same dose
- Duration
- Ninety days
- Reported outcome
- Both treatments produced symptomatic improvement on psychometric tests with good tolerability, and alpha-GPC showed statistically higher efficacy on most measures than the comparator

Community and practice descriptions
Accounts of a practice are not evidence of safety or effectiveness. Words such as “standard”, “safe” or “recommended” describe the source account, not verified consensus or this wiki’s advice. Commercial and self-published citations are retained for traceability, not vendor endorsement or independent clinical corroboration.
Historical research outcome: no-verified-description · 2026-10-06
No suitable community description was independently verified in these checks. The entry remains empty; this does not establish that no practice exists elsewhere.
