Dutasteride

An FDA-approved 5-alpha reductase inhibitor for benign prostatic hyperplasia, used off-label for hair loss.

Evidence category: Regulator / guideline. This describes the source category, not approval or certainty.

Regulatory statement in source: FDA-approved.

Dutasteride (Avodart) is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor approved by the FDA in 2001 for benign prostatic hyperplasia. It blocks both type 1 and type 2 5-alpha reductase enzymes, converting testosterone to DHT more effectively than finasteride. While FDA-approved only for BPH, it is prescribed off-label for male pattern baldness, where it is approved in South Korea (2009) and Japan (2015).

Benefits reported in the imported source

  • Benign prostatic hyperplasia in men.

Risks and limits

  • Sexual dysfunction
  • Decreased libido
  • Off-label use for hair loss not FDA-approved in the U.S.
  • Pregnancy category X (teratogenic)

Source bottom line: FDA-approved for BPH only; off-label use for hair loss requires physician judgment and is approved in other countries only.
