Atorvastatin
A statin that lowers LDL cholesterol by blocking an early step of hepatic cholesterol synthesis.
Evidence category: Regulator / guideline. This describes the source category, not approval or certainty.
Regulatory statement in source: FDA-approved.
Atorvastatin is a synthetic HMG-CoA reductase inhibitor, or statin, that lowers LDL cholesterol by blocking an early step in hepatic cholesterol synthesis. It is approved by the FDA to reduce the risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, and other cardiovascular events in adults with elevated cardiovascular risk, and separately to lower LDL cholesterol across several inherited and acquired lipid disorders, including pediatric familial hypercholesterolemia. Its cardiovascular outcome and safety data span numerous large randomized trials.
Benefits reported in the imported source
- Reduce risk of myocardial infarction, stroke, revascularization, and angina in adults with elevated cardiovascular risk.
- One of the most extensively studied statins, with cardiovascular outcome trials spanning primary and secondary prevention populations.
- Approved down to pediatric familial hypercholesterolemia populations under specific age and diagnostic criteria.
Risks and limits
- Labeled risk of myopathy and rhabdomyolysis, a rare but serious muscle breakdown reaction.
- Not labeled for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to potential fetal harm.
- Liver enzyme elevations are a labeled adverse reaction requiring periodic monitoring.
Source bottom line: Atorvastatin is an FDA-approved, extensively studied statin for cardiovascular risk reduction and LDL lowering, labeled with monitoring requirements for muscle and liver effects.

Community and practice descriptions
Accounts of a practice are not evidence of safety or effectiveness. Words such as “standard”, “safe” or “recommended” describe the source account, not verified consensus or this wiki’s advice. Commercial and self-published citations are retained for traceability, not vendor endorsement or independent clinical corroboration.
Historical research outcome: no-verified-description · 2026-10-06
No suitable community description was independently verified in these checks. The entry remains empty; this does not establish that no practice exists elsewhere.

Pharmacokinetic context
Historical half-life estimate: 20–30 hours. FDA label, Lipitor: parent-drug half-life is about 14 hours, but HMG-CoA reductase inhibitory activity (parent plus active metabolites) has a half-life of 20-30 hours, which is the figure usually quoted for dosing purposes Population/route context and estimates may differ. This is not a schedule or a verified human dosing rule.
