Andarine (S4)

A selective androgen receptor modulator whose development was abandoned due to vision side effects.

Evidence category: Preclinical. This describes the source category, not approval or certainty.

Regulatory statement in source: Not separately recorded; do not infer approval from the evidence category.

Andarine (S4, GTX-007) is a selective androgen receptor modulator originally developed by GTx, Inc. for musculoskeletal diseases and benign prostatic hyperplasia. Clinical development was abandoned after preclinical identification of visual side effects (night blindness, yellow tint to vision) linked to ocular androgen receptor binding. No Phase I human trials published.

Benefits reported in the imported source

  • Preclinical anabolic effects in muscle and bone
  • Potent lean mass and fat loss in animal models

Risks and limits

  • Development abandoned due to vision side effects (night blindness, yellow tinting)
  • No published Phase I human trials
  • Binding to ocular androgen receptors causes visual disturbances

Source bottom line: Preclinical only; clinical development halted due to reversible but significant vision effects.

Uncertainty: Reference information only. Not medical advice.

Study protocols — reports, not instructions
